Skin Packs are parts of skins that can be made independent of the actual skin used. (a.k.a. Plugins for Skins)

[edit] History

Few people realize it, but Skin Packs have actually been a hidden part of Trillian since the first release of Trillian 0.70. Kid's Cordillera had a plugin folder for emoticons and languages. Unfortunately, the mechanism for changing plugins wasn't very user (or plugin designer) friendly. LizardSoft then introduced an emoticon installer to help end-users configure their emotes by rewriting any skin's code to accept them.

Trillian 1.0 introduced STIXE which also had a plugin folder based on the Cordillera plugins, but again no easy way for the user to configure it. Around this time, The Configurator introduced its own SkinPlugin system with an interface to select plugins and a flexible format for skins to use, based on the ideas developed by Tometheus in BlueTurtle and SETi.

When Trillian 2.0 came out it finally fleshed out the plugins and added an in-program preference page for configuring the plugins. Skinners started calling them 'packs' to distinguish them from Trillian 'plugins' (from Kid's name for 'language-packs' in Cordillera). Finally user configurability had arrived to Trillian skins.

As of Trillian 3.0, Trillian Basic users can also take advantage of Skin Packs. Hopefully the following pages will demystify Skin Packs and show you how to create them and enable them in your own skin. (Also, hopefully this will get more skinners to start using the language packs so that their skins will be internationally compatible too.)
