Talk:Icon pack

juz: How will the new addition of the base-icon type affect icon packs? IMHO it should mean a total rework of the icons that need to be skinned now. If you're unsure of the new base-icon stuff, I added an update to the MISC section of the main page of this trilly3 section.. Or see where I suggested it and it got added here: http://panic.ceruleanstudios.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=435
Basically this new icon type means a huge drop in the amount of icons needed. You define a base-icon for each medium, then you define the different states for each medium (which will hopefully soon allow an "ALL" option too) which are then overlayed on top of the base icon.. The base-icon acts just like the current way the buddy icons are shown in the contact list..
I've requested the ability to use "all", as I said, when defining the buddy statuses, and I'd also hopefully like to see some legacy mode so that new skins which don't do the old style icons can define just the size required and let Trillian handle the "non picture mode" contact list..
Currently the version of Aikon3 that I have modded here has the 48x48 size only defined plus the old icons (Trilly automatically makes the 32x32, 24x24 and 16x16).. This means about 10 base icons covering each of the mediums.. Then I've defined the statuses (away, etc) for each one... which are basically just pointing to the same images (as one away overlay is much like the next - hence the reason I want an "ALL" option here).. If we get the "all" option then the total number of icons needed (main ones anyway) would be something like 25.. plus the other lesser used ones (notify, warn, block etc).. Maybe 35 icons at most..
Oops, sorry I've rambled on, but I would imagine this will effect the way icon packs will work..
And I also hope we can do something like this with the iconholder soon too..
Gone, will be the days of hundreds of icons....
[edit] Future Development
Kid: The current development of Icon Packs is only enough to ease skinners from re-creating all toolbar buttons when what they want to do is just to change the background. Since the feature is still incomplete, we have decided not to add Icon Packs changing utility into Trillian Preferences yet. It is definitely a better idea to include icons.xml inside the pack. The main problem to deal with is, what happens if the skin tries to override icons? We will see how it works out. Trilly 3.1 will be all about packs, packs, packs. ;)
