(user - Tismondo): While I may not be fluent in Japanese, I've been using a Japanese computer at my office in Japan for the past 5 months and can speak a bit to the proper formatting of certain things.

In general, computers error messages, etc. seek simplicity and brevity.

  • For large , medium, small, etc, the Kanji 大　中　小 are all that is necessary.
  • For numbers, Kanji numbers should not be used. The Japanese are well accustomed to Arabic numbers and actually prefer them.
  • 「いらしゃいませ」　refers exclusively to a human's physical presence. It cannot be used to welcome someone to a software program. The more general　「ようこそ」　should be used throughout the translation.

[edit] Katakana

There are many ways to Katakana-ize words. For the word Trillian, it would probably be best to not Katakana-ize it at all. It will not be completely foreign for a Japanese person to read an English name amongst otherwise Japanese contents. There is no effort by natives speakers of French or German to translate the spelling into something more familiar to their tongues, so why should the Japanese translation be any different? In my opinion, this should be applied to Yahoo, AIM, MSN, etc.

Even though the Yahoo Japan website does use 「ヤフー」　on its website, the English version "Yahoo!" still remains familiar to the Japanese. They will have no trouble with "Trillian," either.
